When I contemplate this painting, I think of a rough boy that has been dressed up in a suit, his mother has wiped his nose and told him to behave. There is comedy, as he strains to compose himself, and to conform. He has been asked to fall deeper into the world of society, and asked to further abandon his own world, where the only rule is his rule. I find it sublime to project this landscape as a personality, perhaps even projecting a personality I know, where instead of seeing their face, I would be presented only with this vast expanse of wilderness. It would be sublime because it contains something so profoundly untamable, and a force that would be so far beyond my capability to control.
