The scopic function, the function of vision, the gaze. Reality is not a function of vision. There is a disconnect between our vision and reality. It should be assumed that vision cannot gain reality fully. Pieces of reality get left behind, dropped, unassimilated, into the image. Pieces of reality get assimilated incorrectly into the image. Anamorphosis, distortions, lack, gaps, lacunae, empty spaces, that get filled in, errors that get corrected, bent to conform to some idea of a stable and unified image of the subject. They go undetected, they are created, undetected as errors and visa versa. ’Corrections’ are made, ’errors’ are ’corrected’, ’fixed’, broken images are formed, ’broken’ images are formed.
Tracing the form of this horse, carefully, going over this image of a horse, this representation, trying to find the gaps, trying to identify the gaps, the errors and the ’errors’. A dialectic, a process, a bootstrapping process, trying ultimately to find ones own gaze that is not based on the gaze of the other, but based on ones own values and beliefs. Fraught with ’error’ and error. The labyrinthine complexity, confusion, mystery, dimly looking by moonlight, while the thunder rolls over the hills and valleys, and the rain falls, and the grass grows.
Who will be my guide? Who will help weave the fine threads that constitute my image? Do you trust me? Let’s go on a magic carpet ride. :)
