Boyhood (Film image #18)
2016, Acrylic on board, 38x140cm
** accepted into Thami Mnyele national art competition 2016
Artist statement:
The boy is enclosed in a womb-like space, a metaphor in this case for the Lacanian imaginary realm in which a psyche functions before the fall into the symbolic realm, free from the restrictions and rules of 'the Big Other' or society. The transition, or the 'fall', into the symbolic realm and then the sublime and traumatic journey back out, is something that this boy, and indeed all of us, will need to keep negotiating in our lives.
