The inherent mechanical impersonality embodied in a machine made image, such as a film image, is subverted by its translation into painting, a human handmade process. Ironically, the technique employed imitates that of a modern printer in that I layer cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK). This rather meticulous layering of colour in a scheme similar to that of a modern printer sets up a context of rigid mechanical impersonality, which can then be ripped apart and subverted from within by my innate human imperfection and a determined, if rather cautious, disregard for these rules. By incorporating images of local landscapes along with exotic film images this body of work becomes, for me, an investigative probation into the boundaries of my reality and my separation from it.
